These are a form of social media popularly called social bookmarking sites. These are like favourites in your web browser, but you save them online, so that you can view and access your favourites from any computer. You can also share your favourites with your friends and search everyone’s favourites to see which websites they have found useful or interesting.
Instead of folders to organise these favourites, you use tags, which you make up as you need them. Tags are a useful way to organise and share your favourites, and make it easy to search.
Increasingly, people are using these social bookmarking sites rather than search engines to find relevant websites. This is because search engine results are categorised by computers, and social bookmarking sites by people. People tend to trust other people more than computers.
This new type of internet content is called User Generated Content (UGC), and social bookmarking sites are just one type of UGC which is gaining in popularity throughout the internet. Some other popular forms of social media are Blogs, Vlogs and Wikis, but these are certainly not the only ones. These are all ways internet users are interacting and sharing ideas, opinions and media in the online environment.
Try participating in social media; it is important to keep in touch with online trends and developments when building your online marketing strategy.
