.... an ‘online presence’ is simply no longer enough.

Readers or Search Engines?

12 Jun 2007 by jason

There are different kinds of readers on the web, and they read your articles in very different ways (this includes blog posts, press releases and website copy). So, is it more important to optimise for readers or search engines?

Well, who are you really trying to reach? Real people of course. Consider them first. But remember, if they never see the article in the first place, they can never read it, no matter how brilliant it is. A combination is therefore your best bet.
When writing for search engines, you need to consider:

  • Which keywords are most relevant
  • The density and prominence of those keywords

When writing for human readers, be sure to:

  • Use snappy and interesting language
  • Arouse interest
  • Make your article relevant or informative

The best thing you can do is learn how to use keywords in an interesting way. This is the real challenge, but it is something everyone can learn.
